John B. Shepherd Heirs to Lorenzo Hogland - 1 Acre

After John H. Baker & wife transferred ownership of the forge tract to Charles Quirey and James E. Tyler in 1845, Quirey and Tyler sold about 3 acres of it that adjoined Shepherdsville on the west and next to the graveyard to George W. Miles. Miles sold the acre closest to town to John B. Shepherd in 1849. Following Shepherd's death, the tract was deeded by his heirs, via a court suit, to Lorenzo Hogland, as shown below. Hogland then sold the acre to Henry J. Craycroft in December 1852.

This indenture made this 11th day of October 1852 between Elizabeth Shepherd, widow, and Ann Shepherd, Elizabeth Shepherd Jr., Elvira Shepherd and Mary Shepherd, heirs of John B. Shepherd dec'd by Robert F. Samuels, commissioner for them for that purpose, of one part and Lorenzo Hogland of the second part.

Witnesseth that whereas in the suit in chancery of Lorenzo Hogland against John B. Shepherd's heirs in the Bullitt Circuit Court the said court did by its decree dated the 16th day of October 1851 decree and order the sale of a house and lot of ground adjoining the town of Shepherdsville in the pleadings named to be sold in satisfaction of said decree, and appointed Henry C. Thomas commissioner to sell the same, and said commissioner did advertise said lot and house to be sold at the courthouse store in Shepherdsville on the 17th day of November 1851, and said Thomas, commissioner, attended and sold said lot and house as ordered in said decree and Lorenzo Hogland, the complainant, became the purchaser for the sum of $184.70, and said commissioner returned his report of sale to court on the 12th day of April 1852 and said report was confirmed and on the 16th day of April 1852 R. F. Samuels was appointed commissioner on the part of said John B. Shepherd's heirs to convey said house and lot to said Lorenzo Hogland. Wherefore in consideration of the whole premises the decree, order of sale and report of commissioners &c in said cause, the said Elizabeth Shepherd, Ann Shepherd, Elizabeth Shepherd Jr., Elvira Shepherd and Mary Shepherd by Robert F. Samuels, commissioner for them for that purpose, has sold and conveyed and by these presents does sell and convey unto him the said Lorenzo Hogland and to his heirs and assigns forever the said house and lot so sold adjoining the town of Shepherdsville, reference to the pleadings and said cause will more fully describe said house and lot with the appurtenances to the same belonging or in any wise appertaining.

To have and to hold said house and lot with the appurtenances unto him the said Lorenzo Hogland and to his heirs and assigns forever against the claims of said heirs of John B. Shepherd dec'd and all others as fully as by this deed said commissioner can warrant title to the same without individual responsibility on said commissioner. State of Kentucky, Bullitt Circuit Court, 11th October 1852. I Robert F. Samuels, clerk of the aforesaid court, do certify that on the date above the foregoing deed from John B. Shepherd's heirs by R. F. Samuels, commissioner, to Lorenzo Hogland was produced in open court and acknowledged by R. F. Samuels, commissioner, to be the act and deed of the grantors therein named; approved by the court and ordered to be certified to the clerk of the Bullitt County Court for record which is hereby done. I Robert F Samuels, clerk of the county court for said County, certify that on the 11th day of October 1852 the foregoing deed was produced to me in my office for record and being duly authenticated the same and the certificate thereon endorsed and this certificate are truly recorded in my office this eighth day of November 1852.
