Humphrey Simmons & John Chaddic to County Government - Lot 9

On 17 Feb 1819, James Halbert sold Shepherdsville lot #9 to John Chaddic. The lot would later arrive in the hands of the Bank of the Commonwealth through court proceedings, and then be sold to Humphrey Simmons. Then in 1840 the lot was sold to the County Government as a site for a new jail, as shown below.

This indenture made and entered into this 20th of April 1840 between Humphrey Simmons and John Chaddic Sr. Of the county of Bullitt and state of Kentucky of the one part and Henry F. Kalfus, Thomas Shain, James Samuels, John Graham, David L. Brooks, William W. Swearingen, Austin Hall, Jacob Peacock, Henry Crist, Wilford Lee, Richard W. Deats and Thomas J. Joyce, the regularly commissioned and acting justices of the piece of the county of Bullitt of the other part.

Witnesseth that the said Humphrey Simmons and John Chaddic Sr. for an in consideration of the sum of $300 to them paid, to wit, the $300 paid to Chaddic and one dollar thereof to said Simmons, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, have granted, bargained and sold, and by these presents do grant, bargain, and sell unto the said Henry F. Kalfus, Thomas Shain, James Samuels, John Graham, David L. Brooks, William W. Swearingen, Austin Hall, Jacob Peacock, Henry Crist, Wilford Lee, Richard W. Deats and Thomas J. Joyce and their successors in office the following lot of ground lying in Shepherdsville on Main Street, known on the new plan of Shepherdsville, Bullitt County as Lot No. 9, fronting on Main Street 198'11" and extending back 99'5", containing one-half acre, and lying in the county of Bullitt, together with all and singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining.

To have and to hold the lot of ground hereby conveyed with the appurtenances unto the said Henry F. Kalfus, Thomas Shain, James Samuels, John Graham, David L. Brooks, William W. Swearingen, Austin Hall, Jacob Peacock, Henry Crist, Wilford Lee, Richard W. Deats and Thomas J. Joyce and their successors in office forever. And the said Humphrey Simmons for himself, his heirs, executors the aforesaid lot of ground and its appurtenances unto the said Henry F. Kalfus, Thomas Shain, James Samuels, John Graham, David L. Brooks, William W. Swearingen, Austin Hall, Jacob Peacock, Henry Crist, Wilford Lee, Richard W. Deats and Thomas J. Joyce and their successors in office against the claim of himself and those claiming under him will forever warrant and defend, but not against the claim of any other person; and the said John Chaddic Sr. for himself, his heirs, executors and administrators the aforesaid lot of ground and appurtenances unto the said Henry F. Kalfus, Thomas Shain, James Samuels, John Graham, David L. Brooks, William W. Swearingen, Austin Hall, Jacob Peacock, Henry Crist, Wilford Lee, Richard W. Deats and Thomas J. Joyce and their successors in office against the claim or claims of all and every person or persons whatever, doth and will forever warrant and defend by these presents.

The purchase and conveyance are made for the purpose of erecting a new jail of the county of Bullitt agreeably to acts of assembly passed at the last session of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. In witness whereof the said Humphrey Simmons and John Chaddic Sr. together with Emily Simmons, wife of said Humphrey Simmnons, and Susan Chaddic, wife of said John Chaddic Sr. who hereby relinquished their right of dower in and to the lot hereby conveyed in this deed, have hereunto set their hands and seals the day and date above written.
