Elisha Ray to William Shain - 156 Acres

On 29 Sep 1814, Elisha Ray as executor, and Sarah Ray as widow of John Ray, sold 156 acres to William Shain, the remaining unsold portion of John Ray's 400 acre tract patented to him that lay along Crooked Creek. Note that some the original degree readings are altered in this deed.

This indenture made this 29th day of September in the year of our Lord, 1814 between Elisha Ray, acting executor of John Ray, deceased, and Sarah Ray, widow, and relic of said deceased of the county of Washington, and state of Kentucky of the one part and William Shain of the county of Bullitt and state aforesaid of the other part. Whereas the said decedent in his lifetime sold to the said William Shain all the land of a 400 acre tract in said county of Bullitt which had not been previously sold, and supposed to be about 170 acres lying on the waters of Crooked Creek, and directed by his last will and testament the aforesaid Elijah Ray to make a conveyance of the same whenever payments were made of the purchase money. And the said William Shain having since paid the consideration money, being $288.67 to the said Elisha, acting as executor aforesaid. Now this indenture, witnesseth that the said Elisha Ray, acting as executor aforesaid, and the said Sarah Ray, widow and relict of the said John Ray dec'd, for and in consideration of the premises have granted and sold and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell and convey unto the said William Shain 156 acres of land lying in the aforesaid county of Bullitt on the waters of Crooked Creek (being all of the said 400 acres remaining unsold) which 156 acres of land is bounded as follows to wit.

Beginning at an elm and poplar trees, beginning corner of said 400 acre tract, thence with the line thereof N 8° W (called N 11° W) 254 poles to a hickory, black oak and white oak trees, corner of said 400 acres, thence with another line of said tract N 82° E (called N 79° E) 127 poles to two white oak trees, corner to Royal Glass' land, thence with said Glass' line South 8° East 66 poles to his corner of two white oaks and a gum tree, thence S 79° W 8 poles to two poplars and a gum tree, corner of 150 acres of land belonging to Henry Hart, thence with said Hart's line South 8° E 48 poles to a mulberry and small hickory trees, thence with a line of said Hart's 35 acre tract S 82° W 40 poles to two white oaks and a small beech trees, corner of said 35 acres, thence with another line of same S 8° E 140 poles to a black oak, white oak and hickory in a line of said 400 acre tract, thence with said line South 82° West (called S 79° W) 80 poles to the beginning, be the same more or less than the 156 acres hereby sold.

To have and to hold the before described tract of land with the appurtenances thereto belonging unto the said William Shain, his heirs, executors &c to and for his and their only proper use, benefit and behoof forever. And the said Elisha Ray, acting as executor aforesaid for and on behalf of the said decedent and his heirs, and the said Sarah Ray, widow and relict aforesaid in her own right and device of said John, do covenant, promise and agree to and with the said William Shain that they will forever warrant and defend the before described tract of land against the claim o all persons whatsoever claiming by through from or under the said John Ray and his heirs.
