Joseph McGee to Richard P. Simmons - Half of Shepherdsville Lot 56

While most original Shepherdsville lots were sold as whole lots, the one sitting at the corner of Main and Water Streets (originally numbered as #5, and later as #56) was divided in half, with Thomas McGee purchasing the southern half, as shown below, and John Scott the northern part.

After purchasing the half-lot on 3 Mar 1817, McGee sold it two days later to Maxwell Huston, as shown below. It is not yet clear how long Huston owned the half-lot, but by 7 Oct 1828 it was in the hands of Joseph McGee who then sold it to Richard P. Simmons, as shown below.

This indenture made this 7th day of October 1828 between Joseph L. McGee and Celia his wife of the county of Spencer and State of Kentucky of the one part, and Richard P. Simmons of the County of Bullitt and state aforesaid of the other part.

Witnesseth that we the said Joseph and Celia for and in consideration of the sum of $233.33 in hand paid by said Richard, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, have granted, bargained and sold, and by these presents doth sell, alien and convey to the said Richard one lot in the town of Shepherdsville designated in the new plat of said town by No. 56.

Beginning at the southeast corner of the original lot fronting Water Street, running thence North 62 1/2° [should be 6 1/2°] East the course of the street to the corner of James Burks' lot, part of said original lot, thence with Burks' line to the line of Elizabeth Crow, formerly Elizabeth Skyles' lot, thence with her line to the corner, thence with Water Street to the beginning, it being the same sold by Thomas McGee to Maxwell Huston.

To have and to hold the aforesaid lot with all and singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging to him the said Richard and his heirs forever. And the said Joseph and Celia his wife do hereby agree to warrant and defend the title of the said lot from them, the said Joseph and Celia, and their heirs forever, and from the claim or claims of all and every other person or persons whatsoever. In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals the day and date above written. [signed by grantors]
