Benjamin F. Hargan to William A. Watson - 99 Acres

Recently Mark and Sandy Veatch contributed to the museum a collection of original deeds and financial documents dating back a century or more that had come into their possession.

Included were a set of deeds that following the transfer of a tract of land near Lebanon Junction as it passed from J. L. Magruder to Ben Hargan (1904), then to William A. Watson (1904), and on to Dr. W. S. Napper (1909), and finally to Johnathan Masden in 1910. Below is a transcription and images of the second of those deeds.

Ben F. Hargan to W. A. Watson

This indenture made and entered into this the 26th day of March 1904 by and between Ben F. Hargan of the county of Bullitt, state of Kentucky, party of the first part, and W. A. Watson of the county of Hardin and state of Kentucky, party of the second part. Witnesseth:

That the party of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of $629, paid and to be paid as follows, to wit: $229 cash in hand, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, $100 to be paid two years after date of above, $100 to be paid three years after said date, and $200 to be paid four years after said date; notes executed for each bearing 6% interest from date till paid; hath bargained and sold, and by these presents doth bargain, sell and convey unto the party of the second part, his heirs and assigns, a certain tract of land lying and being in the County of Bullitt, State of Kentucky, and bounded as follows:

Beginning at a stone, corner to Duvall, thence S 58 1/2° W 82 poles to a stone, corner to Ben F. Hargan, thence with said Hargan, N 26° W 139 3/5 poles to a black oak, pine and small white oak, corner to [same, thence N 60° E 22 poles to a white oak, corner to] Starks', thence with said Starks' N 27° W 60 poles to a marked Chestnut oak on the east side of a high knob, and corner to Duvall, thence with Duvall's line N 59° E 62 poles to a marked tree in the original line, thence S 30° E 114 poles to a stone in a branch, thence S 20° E 86 1/2 poles to the beginning, containing 99 acres, 112 poles.

To have and to hold the same unto the party of the second part, his heirs and assigns forever with covenant of general warranty.

In testimony whereof the said Ben F. Hargan together with Mary B. Hargan his wife, who hereby relinquishes her right of dower in and to the land herein conveyed, hath set their hand and seals the day and date as above.
