Wilhite Carpenter to Benjamin Oxley - 16+ Acres

On 29 Sep 1857, Benjamin F. Oxley of Missouri purchased land adjoining Shepherdsville from Wilhite Carpenter, as shown below, and also land from Lorenzo Hoglan as shown on another page. These two tracts were combined into what became known as Oxley's Addition to Shepherdsville.


Bullitt County Deed Book O, Pages 35-36

This indenture made this 29th day of September 1857 between Willhite Carpenter and Letitia Carpenter his wife of the county of Bullitt and state of Kentucky of the one part and Benjamin F. Oxley of the state of Missouri of the second part. Witnesseth that the party of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of $586.25 ($300 of which sum is in hand paid and the note of the party of the second part for $286.25 of due date herewith payable in 90 days from this date) hath granted, bargained and sold, and doth by these presents grant, bargain and sell the following tract or parcel of land lying in the county of Bullitt and adjoining the town of Shepherdsville and bounded as follows.

Beginning at a stake on East Street, thirty-seven feet from the northwest corner of the Seminary lot, thence S 82 1/2° E 28 poles 15 links to an elm, thence N 59°15' E 37 poles 9 links to a stake in McGee's line, thence N 38 1/4° W 80 poles 24 links to a stake inside of McDowell's fence, thence S 7 1/2° W 80 poles to the beginning, containing sixteen acres, three roods, and three poles.

To have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land unto the said Benjamin F. Oxley, his heirs and assigns against the claim of the party of the first part, and their heirs, and against the claim of all persons claiming or to claim the same. A lein is retained by the party of the first part for the deferred payment of purchase money. In witness whereof the party of the first part hath hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year first written. (signed) W. Carpenter, Letitia (her x mark) Carpenter. Witness: C. R. Samuels.

State of Kentucky, Bullitt County Sct. I Robert F. Samuels, clerk of the county court for said county, do certify that on the 29th day of September 1857 this deed from Willhite Carpenter and Letitia his wife to Benjamin F. Oxley was produced to me in my office and acknowledged by the said Willhite Carpenter and Letitia his wife to be their act and deed for the purposes therein mentioned. Whereupon the same was ordered to be recorded which is truly done in my office this 12th day of October 1857. (signed) R. F. Samuels, clerk.
