67-TRUNNELL

From Suffolk County, England, to Bullitt County, Kentucky, stopping on the way in Maryland, in distance "a fur piece" as our pioneer settlers phrased it, and the journey has since been extended westward to the Pacific Ocean by at least two members of the TRUNNELL family, Mrs. Edna TRUNNELL Eddy, a daughter of Dr. Phil TRUNNELL, who lives in California, and by her brother, Bradley H. TRUNNELL, who died in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1949.

In time, the family's history runs through five centuries from the sixteenth into the twentieth century, and in years from 1550 to 1950.

David TRUNDLE lived in England in the 1500's, his son, John came to America with the first colonists to settle in Maryland; he wsa accompanied by his son, John Jr., born in England, 1624, died in Anne Armdel county, Maryland, 1698. John Jr. ws married twice, his second wife being Mary ROSS.

Their son, also named John, was born in 1682, and died in Maryland; his son, John, was born about 1710-20 in Prince George's county, Maryland, from which came many of the early settlers of Kentucky. This John TRUNDLE was a soldier in the French and Indian War, and died in Maryland in 1771. His son, Josiah, was born in Frederick county, Maryland in 1755, and was an American Patriot in the Revolution.

His wife was Katherine WILSON, probably a daughter of Edwin and Ann WILSON.

Josiah and Katherine's son, John, changed the spelling of the family name to "TRUNNELL," as it was usually pronounced. He was born in Montgomery county, Maryland, and died in Bullitt County, Kentucky, in 1847. He studied medicine, became a doctor and practiced in Washington, D.C., before emigrating to Kentucky.

Dr. John TRUNNELL married (1) Elizabeth WELLS, daughter of Jacob WELLS, and American soldier in the Revolution, and son of Nathan WELLS and Mary DUCKETT. The TRUNNELLs, WELLS, and DUCKETTs were all pioneer families in Montgomery County, Maryland.

Dr. TRUNNELL married (2) Elizabeth GRAY LLOYD, a widow, who was born in Washington, D.C., in 1812. A son by her first married, John LLOYD, born 1836, married a daughter of Thomas SIMMONS (of Bullitt County?).

Twelve children were born of Dr. TRUNNELL's marriage to Elizabeth WELLS. All of them appear to have lived in Bullitt County, and to have married there.

  1. Catherine, married 1826, Benjamin RIDGWAY;
  2. Eliza, married 1829, Samuel HEDGES;
  3. Emily (or Emma), born 1812, married 1833, John CLARKE;
  4. Mahala, born 1813, married 1840, John RIDGWAY;
  5. Clarissa, married 1841, Orville O. BROWN;
  6. Nancy, married (1) 1830, Benjamin W. RIDGWAY; (2) -- LISSMAN;
  7. Henry, born 1817; (his lineage follows hereafter);

  9. Josiah, born 1825, married 1847, Julia ROUSE, daughter of Moses and Sarah ROUSE;

  12. Louisa, married 1848, Woodford McDOWELL.

Two children, Laurie, born 1845, and Marget, born 1847, were born to Dr. John TRUNNELL and his second wife. Laurie married "Yankee Bill" STALLINGS, and her sister Margaret married "Rebel Bill" STALLINGS; they were cousins. Dr. TRUNNELL's children, (except Clarissa and Louisa, who died before their father) are named in a settlement of his estate filed in Bullitt County, Kentucky in 1848.

Henry TRUNNELL (1847-1891), son of Dr. John TRUNNELL and Elizabeth WELLS, married (1) 1830, Louisa GRABLE, daughter of Philip; he married (2) 1848, Mary Jane FIELDS BOWMAN (1825-1896) widow of J. W. BOWMAN; she was a daughter of Abraham FIELDS, and named her only child by this marriage, Abraham BOWMAN, born 1846, after her father.

Arabell (1843-1858), and Philip TRUNNELL, (1846-?) were children of Louisa GRABLE; Philip TRUNNELL, like his grandfather, became a physician and practiced in Bullitt County; he married Hattie HATCHELL, and they had three children.

Henry and Mary FIELDS BOWMAN's children:

  1. Mary Elizabeth (1849-1936) married T. J. POTTINGER;
  2. William Henry (1851-1881);
  3. Alfred Fields (1853-1855);
