Annotated Bullitt County 1850 Census

We continue the Bullitt County 1850 census written by Mrs. W. V. Mathis, Wallace A. McKay and W. C. Barrickman. Betty Darnell shared this in The Pioneer Newson 24 Mar 1993.

29 September 1950

Judge Samuel E. DeHaven

Mr. McKay contributes a very readable and interesting article concerning "circuit court sessions in Bullitt under the old Constitution." Mr. McKay says there are not but few of the people of Bullitt who remember the sessions of the Bullitt Circuit Court, over which Judge DeHaven presided (1850-1891).

The last judge to hold court under the "old constitution," was Judge Samuel E. DeHAVEN of LaGrange. He was a fine, learned, old-time lawyer, and by common concent was regarded as one of the ablest and best Circuit Judges in the Commonwealth. He was a good- sized man, more than six feet in height, with dark iron-grey hair and beard.

To what Mr. McKay has written I (Barrickman) wish to add a [postcript. My father and the "old Judge" were life-long friends and business associates. They were both born in the same year, my father on Smith's Run, a tributary of Harrod's Creek, in Oldham County, and Sam on Wolf-pen branch, also a tributary of Harrod's Creek, near the Oldham-Jefferson county line.

When I was born I narrowly escaped being the Judge's namesake; my father wanted me named Sam, my mother insisted that I should be named for her father; so they "compromised" and I was named Wilhite. Judge DeHAVEN gave me my first saddle and briddle, but it was my grandfather CARPENTER who provided the horse!
