"Bullitt Chapel Cemetery Record"

Close to the county line between Bullitt and Nelson, near Deatsville, once stood a pioneer Catholic Chapel. Its head was the Rev. Charles Nerinckx, a native of Belgium. he founded the teaching order of the "Loretto Sisters at the Foot of the Cross," to provide educational opportunties for the children of the pioneers who settled in that section, and built the chapel of St. John, locally called Bullitt Chapel.

In 1811 Joseph AUD, a Maryland immigrant to Nelson County, bought of Henry CRIST 300 acres on "Rock Run," in Bullitt County. In 1814 he gave by deed, a tract of land containing 10 acres, called "Assumption Hill," to the Right Reverent Benedict Joseph Flaget, bishop of Bardstown; on this tract St. John's Chapel was built, and a • burial-ground laid off, "adjoining the plantation the said Joseph AUD now lives on." He died in 1815, and his grave was one of the first in the new cemetery, although the record below does not include his name. The record does include the Levi MAGRUDER family plot, which is not within the walls of the cemetery, but adjoins it in an enclosing wall of its own.

The archives of the Sisters of Loretto at Loretto, Ky., has a list of those who are buried in the Chapel Cemetery, and Sister M. Philippa (HENDERSON), of the Motherhouse of the Loretto Sisterhood at Nerincla, who is a great-granddaughter of Joseph AUD, has graciously copied the lists for "Who Was Who." It contains the names of many early settlers in Bullitt a hundred or more years ago.
