A number of schools in this section discontinued debating because of the flood, and for awhile it seemed that we would let it pass away with other ruins of the flood. We were to have given our first preliminary debate on January 22, the day school was dismissed for the flood. We lost three valuable weeks, and when school opened our debating morale was at a low ebb. Thanks to a reviving spirit and a determined group of students, we survived the flood and were ready to begin by the second week the hard grind of getting ready for the debate tournament. We met White Mills, Elizabethtown, and Shepherdsville teams in preliminary non-decision debates before the debate tournament. The debate tournament was held at Hartford on March 27. Considering the fact that we had less experience than any team of the tournament, we made a very good showing. In the preliminary debates we defeated Caneyville High School, and in the semi-finals we were defeated by Elizabethtown, the district champions. We have some very fine material in this year's debating team, and they and their sponsor are to be congratulated on their success. The team is composed of Marvin Bryant, a freshman ; Burlyn Pike and Billie Samuels, sophomores, and Naomi Harned, a junior. We anticipate great things from these students next year.
