Original Shepherdsville Lots - Lot 24 (South Part)

After Jonathan Gore Jr. obtained the south half of lot 24, he sold it to Rufus K. Summers by way of the town trustees as shown in the first deed below. Later, in the second deed below, Summers acknowledged that James Shanks had granted to the county government a 40 foot square of the southeast corner of the lot to become part of the town square. This was where they built the first jail.

This indenture made this 15th day of March 1827 between Abraham Field, George W. Jenkins and M. Wilson, trustees of the town of Shepherdsville in Bullitt County, Kentucky of the one part and Rufus K. Summers of the same county and state of the other part. Witness that whereas Adam Shepherd, who was the proprietor of the land on which the said town of Shepherdsville was laid out, sold to James Shanks lot number 24 in the new plan of said town as will appear by reference to his order in favor of James Halbert to the trustees to convey the northern half of said lot, recorded in the minute book of said trustees. And whereas also the southern half of said lot has been sold by Henry F. Kalfus, the collector of the town for the taxes due on said part, and Jonathan Gore Jr. became the purchaser. And the same part of said lot was sold by William Caldwell, deputy sheriff, for James Alexander, sheriff of Bullitt County, as the property of the heirs of James Shanks, deceased, by virtue of an execution in the name of James Cox against said heirs and representatives, and Jonathan Gore Jr. became the purchaser, and the said Gore Jr. has sold the said part of said lot to the said Rufus K. Summers, which will more fully appear by reference to the deeds from the said Kalfus, collector as aforesaid, and the said Caldwell, deputy sheriff as aforesaid, to the said Gore Jr., and from the said Gore Jr. and wife to the said Rufus K. Summers recorded in the clerk's office of the Bullitt County Court.

Now the said Abraham Field, George W. Jenkins and Matthew Wilson, trustees as aforesaid, for and in consideration of the premises hath, and by these presents doth grant, alien, release, convey and confirm unto the said Rufus K. Summers, his heirs &c, the southern half of said lot number 24. To have and to hold the said part of lot number 24 with all the appurtenances thereto belonging unto him the said Rufus K. Summers, his heirs &c, and to his and their only proper use, benefit and behoof forever, free and clear of and from all encumbrances whatsoever, hereby warranting as trustees the said described part of said lot to the said Rufus K. Summers from the claims of all persons lawfully claiming or to claim the same. In witness whereof the said Abraham Field, George W. Jenkins and Matthew Wilson, trustees as aforesaid, hereto set their hands and seals on the day and year before written. (signed) Abraham Field, G. W. Jenkins, Matthew Wilson. State of Kentucky, Bullitt County Court Office, 14 April 1827 This indenture was produced to me the clerk of the court for said county on the 6th of the present month and acknowledged by Matthew Wilson and on the 13th same month acknowledged by George W. Jenkins, and on 14th date above acknowledged by Abraham Field to be th3ir acts and deed for the purposes therein mentioned, and the same is thereupon truly entered of record in my office. Teste. Whereas James Shanks did on the 19th day of January 1811 execute to the Justices of the County Court of Bullitt County his obligation to release and convey to them forty feet of his lot number twenty four in the new plan of the town of Shepherdsville to be taken off the southeast corner of said lot for public ground, being that part whereon the jail was erected, and whereas the southern half of said lot including the forty feet aforesaid has been conveyed to Rufus K. Summers by deeds duly recorded in the clerk's office of the Bullitt County Courts, now this indenture made this 15th day of March, 1827, between the said Rufus K. Summers of the county of Bullitt and state of Kentucky of the one part and Samuel Brown, James Samuels, Rodolphus Bukey, Lewis Willcoxin Sr., William Hill, Henry H. Samuels, George Hedges, Jacob Peacock, Nathaniel P. Saunders, Jesse Wilson, Henry F. Kalfus, Thomas Shain and George F. Pope, Justices of the County Court of Bullitt County of the other part, witnesseth that the said Rufus K. Summers for and in consideration of the said bond hath and by these presents doth grant, alien, release, convey and confirm unto the said Justices of the County Court and their successors in office the said forty feet square to be taken off the southeast corner of said lot number twenty four. To have and to hold the same piece or parcel of sald lot described as aforesaid with all the appurtenances unto the said Justices and their successors in office from the claim of him the said Rufus K. Summers, his heirs &c, but not against the claim or claims of another person or persons whatever. In testimony whereof the said Rufus K. Summers hereto sets his hand and seal on the day and year above written. (signed) Rufus K. Summers Signed, sealed and delivered in the presence of George F. Pope.
