In 1843, a group of men, including Abraham Chappell, William F. Chappell, John W. Goheen, William Stibbins, James Arnold and Richard Skinner, purchased a half share (1000 acres) of Robert Sanford's 2000 acre patent from Nathaniel Pope who was living in Illinois at the time. We have not yet determined how Pope obtained this land.
According to the deed shown below, George W. Miles obtained John W. Goheen's share, and Abraham Chappell obtained William F. Chappell's share. Then in 1845, 261 acres of the tract was deeded to Abraham Chappell by the others, as shown below.

This indenture made and entered into this 16th day of May 1845 by and between George W. Miles, William Stibbins, James Arnold and Richard Skinner, parties of the first part, and Abram Chappell of the second part, all of the county of Bullitt and state of Kentucky, and whereas the said Abram Chappell, William Stibbins, James Arnold, Richard Skinner and one John W. Goheen and William F. Chappell purchased jointly of Nathaniel Pope of Illinois a tract of land in said county of Bullitt containing by estimate 1000 acres, and said George Miles took the place and benefit of said John W. Goheen and his purchase, and said Abram Chappell took the place of said William F. Chappell and the benefit of his purchase, and whereas the said Abram Chappell paid to the said Pope, grantor in the original purchase of 1000 acres, the full price of one dollar per acre for 261 acres. Now this indenture witnesseth that the said Miles, Arnold, Stibbins and Skinner3 for and in consideration of the sum so paid by the said Abraham Chappell to the said Pope and the further consideration of the deed of quit claim from the said Chappell to the said Miles, Arnold, Skinner and Stibbins, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledge before the signing and sealing hereof, hath granted, bargained, sold, aliened and conveyed, and by these presents doth grant, bargain, sell, enfeoff and confirm to him the said Abram Chappell, his heirs and assigns forever, all that part of said 1000 acres being the undivided half of Robert Sandford's 2000 acre survey, and bounded as follows, to wit.
Beginning at a stake at the intersection of a line of the original 2000 acre survey with the line of John W. Goheen, now owned by said George W. Miles, and running thence with said lines N 44° W 77 poles to two sugar trees, a hickory and a redbud in the north line of Jacob Myers' 1200 acre survey, thence N 7° [or 70°] E 228 poles to a stone in a road near where a cabin stands, thence with the road N 70 1/2° E 38 poles, N 74° E 53 poles, N 55° E 31 poles, N 69° E 40 poles, N 55° E 34 poles to wo white oaks, two chestnut oaks and a red oak standing on both sides of the road and in a line of the 2000 acre survey, thence with the same S52° E 51 poles to two hickories and two small beeches, thence with another of the original lines S 30 1/4° West 338 poles to the beginning.
To have and to hold the said tract of land of 261 acres more or less to him the said Abram Chappell and his heirs forever, with all and singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining. And the said George W. Miles and Mary his ife who relinquishes her right of dower, William Arnold and Mary his wife who relinquishes her right of dower, William Stibbins and Susan his wife who relinquishes her right of dower, and Richard Skinner and Rebecca his wife who relinquishes her right of dower further covenant to and with the said Abram Chappell and his heirs &c that they will and their heirs shall warrant and defend the title to said land against all and every person claiming or to claim in, under, by or through them the said Miles, Arnold, Stibbins and Skinner, but against the claim of no other person or persons. In testimony whereof the said grantors have set their hands and seals the day and date first above written. John W. Goheen and Rebecca Ann his wife, and William F. Chappell and Eliza Ann his wife hereby join in this conveyance to its full extent and legal meaning. (Signed by the named parties.)
