Nathan Evans' Heirs to Smith & Rowland - 200 Acres

On 9 Apr 1855, the heirs of Nathan Evans, by R. F. Samuels as commissioner, deeded the following tract of land to A. O. Smith and George W. Rowland of the firm of Smith & Rowland, of Louisville as shown below. This was the result of a Circuit Court suit brought by Smith & Rowland and Docia Purcell against Evans' heirs in which the court ordered the sale of the land. This occurred on 18 Sep 1854 and Smith & Rowland were the purchasers with a bid of $820.

Then on 25 Apr 1855, Abraham O. Smith, George J. Rowland and their wives sold the 200 acres to William Patterson for the sum of $1530, cash and notes, making a good profit on their investment.

The land sold was the balance of the 400 acres owned by Nathan Evans in his lifetime, this being the 200 acres not sold to William Patterson. It lay on Crooked Creek, and was the eastern half of the 400 acres patented to Thomas Purcell, who deeded it to his son John Purcell, who willed it to Nathan Evans.

The clip of T. C. Carroll plat 28-124 shown below shows the location of the Evans tract (shaded in blue) as divided between William Patterson and the Evans heirs. It appears from the plat that the railroad depot at Belmont would later be located in the tract's northwest corner.
