Annotated Bullitt County 1850 Census

We continue the Bullitt County 1850 census written by Mrs. W. V. Mathis, Wallace A. McKay and W. C. Barrickman. Betty Darnell shared this in The Pioneer News on 24 Feb 1992.

These records have been briefly compared to images of the census pages, and occasional additions or corrections have been made. Those changes we consider significant are noted with red print. Also, the census dwelling house number and family number according to visitation has been added, like this: [1/1].

14 April 1950

Wallace McKay writes, "I recall the chicken fights, forbidden by law, in the old blacksmith shop on Salt River, near town. They were promoted and carried by one Jack SPENCER, who might be called the king of sports of that period. Jack was a conspicuous character because he never shaved, and the reason for that was because he wanted to beat a creditor. Sitting in the chair getting a shave at ALEXANDER' s barber-shop one day, Jack was questioned rather bluntly by Frank TROUTMAN about a big grocery bill which had been running for a long time at Troutman Brothers' Store. His mouth full of lather, Jack sputtered, Frank, will you please wait for me to settle your account until I finish gettng shaved? Surprised at such prompt results to his demand for payment, Frank answered, why, of course; then, from this day on I'll never shave again, announced Jack as he got out of the chair and wiped the leather from his face, and that's why Jack's credit was no longer good at Troutman's."
