Bullitt County History

Annotated Bullitt County 1850 Census

We continue the Bullitt County 1850 census written by Mrs. W. V. Mathis, Wallace A. McKay and W. C. Barrickman. Betty Darnell shared this in The Pioneer News on 13 Jan 1992.

These records have been briefly compared to images of the census pages, and occasional additions or corrections have been made. Those changes we consider significant are noted with red print. Also, the census dwelling house number and family number according to visitation has been added, like this: [1/1].

7 April 1950

"Crenshaw Family"

James CRENSHAW, Sr. was apparently the first of that name to come to Kentucky. He was the father of at least six children.

1. Martha ("Patsy") who married a SPENCER. The writers have no information on her children.

2. Joel? Many of the early CRENSHAWs moved on to Missouri, and this one seems to have been the first.

3. Overton, married 1798 Elizabeth HAMILTON. His will names children: a daughter who married an OWEN; Arvil; William; Bluford who married Elizabeth SPENCER in 1825; Angeline who married William STRINGER in 1829; Rhoda who married Nicholas CRIGLER; Martha ("Patsy") who married Thomas RICKS in 1818.

4. Cosby, married Sarah SIMMONS in 1800. Sarah was the daughter of Robert and Catherine SIMMONS. Her brothers Elisha, Esau, and James SIMMONS all became Baptist preachers. Humphrey, William, and Samuel SIMMONS were among the older members of the first SIMMONS family, and Robert SIMMONS was probably a son of one of them. Cosby CRENSHAW's will names his children: Charles, married 1826, Lavina BECKWITH; Allison; Arkans, married 1850, Sarah Elizabeth PORTER, 1828-1899, daughter of James PORTER; Nathan, married 1846 Laura CRIST, daughter of Henry S. CRIST; Grandison, married 1831, Judith BRIDWELL; Kitty, married Charles W. MOORE; Susanna, married 1826 William TEMPLE; Nancy, married 1842, Joseph P. SIMMONS.

5. Nelson married Susanna CREMOR in 1801; their children: William, married Martha McKENZIE; Vardaman, married 1840, Eliza OWEN; John, married 1832, Mary Eliza TROUTMAN, daughter of Abraham and Eleanor MAGRUDER TROUTMAN; Elvina, married 1837, George WELLER; Joseph, married 1852, Martha A. BRIDWELL - they went to Missouri.

6. Bluford, married in 1810, Rhoda JAMES, daughter of Jesse and Mary JAMES. Their son James married, first, Martha ROUSE, and second, 1831, Harriet ROBY, and third, 1850, Lucy BECKWITH. Bluford CRENSHAW died, and his widow, Rhoda JAMES, married Elisha SIMMONS, a widower, they had several children.
