Nicholas Lewis' 1000 Acre Tract

On 18 Jul 1784 Richard Woolfolk surveyed 1000 acres for Nicholas Lewis that adjoined another 1000 acre tract surveyed for Lewis by Isaac Cox a few months earlier. That earlier tract adjoined Hawkins' preemption that lay opposite the mouth of Cox's Creek. Lewis obtained a deed to this second tract on 4 May 1786. The map below shows the approximate locations of these tracts, as well as those claimed by Richard Johnson. Surveyed for Nicholas Lewis 1000 acres of land by virtue of part of a treasury warrant No. 7816 in Jefferson County on Salt River above Froman's Trace and adjoining a 1000 acre survey of he said Lewis' that joins Terrel & Hawkins' preemption. Beginning at the upper corner of the said survey at a large sugar tree standing on the bank of the river, thence up the river and binding thereon 444 poles to a large sycamore & hoopwood on the bank of the river opposite an island, thence North 10° West 583 poles to three sugar trees, thence South 62° West 426 poles to a honey locust and red oak corner to said Lewis' survey, thence South 50° East 360 poles with the said line to a hickory and sugar tree, thence South 40° West 240 poles to the beginning. Patrick Henry Esquire, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, to all to whom these presents shall come, greeting. Know ye that by virtue and in consideration of a preemption treasury warrant No. 7816, issued the 1st day of November 1781, there is granted by the said Commonwealth unto Nicholas Lewis a certain tract or parcel of land containing 1000 acres by survey bearing date the 18th day of July 1784, lying and being in the County of Jefferson on Salt River above Froman's Trace and adjoining the said Lewis' 1000 acre survey that adjoins Terrell and Hawkins' preemption and bonded as followeth, to wit. Beginning at the upper corner of the said survey at a large sugar tree standing on the bank of the river, thence up the river and binding thereon 444 poles to a large sycamore & hoopwood on the bank of the river opposite an island, thence North 10° West 583 poles to three sugar trees, thence South 62° West 426 poles to a honey locust and red oak corner to said Lewis' survey, thence South 50° East 360 poles with the said line to a hickory and sugar tree, thence South 40° West 240 poles to the beginning with its appurtenances.
