The purpose of this page is to bring together useful information about the newspapers that have been published in Bullitt County, and where they might be found on microfilm. While we hope that this information is accurate, mistakes could have crept in.

Betty Darnell has provided the following notes about these papers.

  • Bullitt Pioneer founded 15 June 1882 by W. B. Gwynn; later published by his brother J. K. Gwynn, Thos H. Morris, Charles Ellsworth McCormick.
  • (McDowell collection at Filson mentions an article on the Pope farm by Wm. R. Thompson in Bullitt Pioneer, 1 Oct 1885) - (a 1982 Pioneer-News quoted the 10 Aug & Sep 1893 issues.)
  • Kentucky Farmer, by Tom Cochran. Prepared by the Devil's Devil, Pioneer-News, 2 Oct 1931: Cochran took the newspaper to Louisville & published several years.
  • Salt River Tiger, founded 16 Dec 1896; files destroyed by 1909 & 1937 floods. A 1982 Pioneer-News quoted the 24 Dec 1896 issue; 1897 issues at Filson Club.
  • Salt River Valley News, by Burlyn Pike and Richard A. Briggs; purchased by Pioneer-News
  • Mt. Washington Star, Bud Settles and Norval Harris; merged with Pioneer-News in 1986
  • North Bullitt Postboy, absorbed by Pioneer-News, 7 Apr 1983
  • Lebanon Junction Booster, c1924-1925, published by a man in New Haven (per Dixie Hibbs, 2001)
  • Bullitt Tribune, Lebanon Junction. Nelson County Record, 28 Jan 1898: "The Bullitt Tribune, Lebanon Junction's new paper, made its appearance here Saturday. The editor, Mr. Moses Fort, was for a year manager of the Salt River Tiger."

The Bullitt County History Museum, a service of the Bullitt County Genealogical Society, is located in the county courthouse at 300 South Buckman Street (Highway 61) in Shepherdsville, Kentucky. The museum, along with its research room, is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Saturday appointments are available by calling 502-921-0161 during our regular weekday hours. Admission is free. The museum, as part of the Bullitt County Genealogical Society, is a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization and is classified as a 509(a)2 public charity.
