James Shanks' 500 Acres

On 23 May 1798, James Shanks surveyed 500 acres for Richard Johnston in Bullitt County. Two days later, W. Johnson, attorney for Richard Johnston, signed the tract over to Shanks who obtained his deed to the land on 4 Feb 1805. This drawing shows the tract in relation to nearby tracts.


Survey

Surveyed for Richard Johnston 500 acres of land in Bullitt County by virtue of part of a treasury warrant number 15616 entered December 13, 1783 and bounded as followeth, vizt. Beginning at a dogwood and hickory it being a corner to Whitaker's 460 acre tract & also to Whitaker's 50 acre tract, and running thence with a line of said 50 acre tract South 60° East 100 poles to Frigg's line, thence with said line North 30° West 15 poles to Frigg's corner of dogwood & ash, thence with another of his lines North 60° East 146 poles to his corner of black oak & dogwood, thence North 200 poles to 2 post oaks on the north side of Delaney's Road where the Old Buffalo trace formerly went, thence West 350 poles to a line of John Dowdall's 500 acre tract, thence with a line thereof and course continued in all 260 poles to a line of Whitaker's 460 acre tract (passing Dowdall's corner of beech, white oak & black oak at 160 poles), thence with Whitaker's line North 80° East 150 poles to the beginning. For value received I do hereby assign unto James Shanks all my right, title, claim & interest of in & to the within described land and the register is requested to issue the pattent in the name of said Shanks and for his benefit, given under my hand and seal this 25th day of May 1798. Deed

Christopher Greenup Esquire, governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, to all to whom these presents shall come, greeting. Know ye that by virtue and in consideration of part of a treasury warrant number 15616 entered December 3rd 1783, there is granted by the said Commonwealth unto James Shanks, assignee of Richard Johnston by his attorney in fact M. G. Johnston a certain tract or parcel of land containing 500 acres by survey bearing date the 23rd day of May 1798, lying and being in the county of Bullitt and bounded as followeth, to wit. Beginning at a dogwood and hickory it being a corner to Whitaker's 460 acre tract & also to Whitaker's 50 acre tract, and running thence with a line of said 50 acre tract South 60° East 100 poles to Frigg's line, thence with said line North 30° West 15 poles to Frigg's corner of dogwood & ash, thence with another of his lines North 60° East 146 poles to his corner of black oak & dogwood, thence North 200 poles to 2 post oaks on the north side of Delaney's Road where the Old Buffalo trace formerly went, thence West 350 poles to a line of John Dowdall's 500 acre tract, thence with a line thereof and course continued in all 260 poles to a line of Whitaker's 460 acre tract (passing Dowdall's corner of beech, white oak & black oak at 160 poles), thence with Whitaker's line North 80° East 150 poles to the beginning with its appurtenances to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land with its appurtenances to the said James Shanks and his heirs forever. In witness whereof the said Christopher Greenup Esquire, Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, hath hereunto set his hand and caused the seal of the said Commonwealth to be affixed at Frankfort on the 4th day of February in the year of our Lord 1805, and of the Commonwealth the 13th.
