In February 1822, Nicholas Russell provided this statement in support of the Revolutionary War pension application for William Case's widow. In it, he indicates that he is about 74 years old which would make his birth year about 1747-48. He shares his and Case's experiences during that war.

On the 2nd day of February 1822 before me the subscriber one of the Justices of the peace for the County aforesaid personally appeared Nicholas Russell aged about seventy four years, and being a resident of the Commonwealth aforesaid in Bullit County who being by me first duly sworn according to law Deposeth and sayeth, that this Deponent and William Case were both serving in the Army of the United States, in the Revoletionary war in Captain Abraham Shepherd's Company, Colonel Rawlin’s Regiment in the Virginia Line which Regiment was stationed at Fort Washington York Island. That when the fort was taken by the enemy on or about the sixteenth day of November seventeen Hundred and seventy six. This Deponent as also the said Wm. Case were taken prisoners by the Brittish and confined on board a British Prison Ship, and being Confined about nine weeks. The said. Wm. Case and this Deponent were Released on Parole by taking the oath not to serve against the British until Regularly exchanged. This Deponent left the said Wm. Case very sick in South Amboy and never saw him afterwards during the war, but afterwards saw him at Redstone in Pennsylvania.
N.B. This deponent saith that he enlisted in and about in and about the first day of September seventeen hundred and seventy six for the term of three years By Capt. Shepherd in Shepherdston under Col. Rawlins. [signed] Nicholes Russel

I Worden Pope, Clerk of the County Court of Jefferson County in the state of Kentucky do certify that George Seaton Esquire whose signature appears on the within certificate is and was on the second day of February an acting Justice of the Peace in and for the county and state aforesaid, duly commissioned and sworn, and that to all his acts as such full faith is and ought to be given.
In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand and affixed the seal of the said county this fourth day of February, one thousand eight hundred and twenty two, and in the thirteenth year of the Commonwealth. [signed] Worden Pope
I John Bell, presiding Justice of the Peace in and for the County Court of Jefferson County in the State of Kentucky, do certify that the above certificate and attestation of Worden Pope, clerk of our said court, is in due form of law and entitled to full faith and credit. I do hereby certify that I have been acquainted with the within named Nicholas Russel between thirty-five and forty years, and that he is a man of honest character and good demeanor so far as I know or believe. Given under my hand this 2nd day of February 1822. [signed] Kenner Seaton
