1828 Mt. Washington Town Trustees Election

Recently we discovered in Deed Book G, page 37, the following election results. At that time Mt. Washington was still called Mount Vernon.

The candidates are listed below. The capital letter preceding each name is used to identify him in the voting chart below.

A. L. Snapp
B. Jacob Fox
C. William Greathouse
D. W. McCroskey
E. L. D. Parrish
F. S. Gasway
G. M. Allen
H. W. Barnes
I. Joseph Lormar
J. W. Lee
K. Stephens

We have attempted to duplicate the chart as it was written in the deed book. It appears that each voter announced his five choices, and the election clerk began marking the votes with a slash mark and then began keeping a running total as each voter's choices were listed. However, there seems to be a discrepancy for it appears that Joseph Lormar cast 6 votes instead of five, or the clerk miscounted at that point. Then, near the end of the voting two additional votes were recorded without giving a voter's name.

"Polls of election held at the house of Abraham Job in the town of Mount Vernon, Bullitt County, on the eleventh day of August 1828 for the purpose of electing five fit persons to serve as trustees of said town, to serve and hold their offices one year agreeably to the act of the Legislature of Kentucky."
