Henry C. & John M. Jones to John Beckwith Sr.
Brick House on Shepherdsville Lot 28

William Jewell purchased lot 28 of the new plan of Shepherdsville on 2 Aug 1814, and held it until 22 Sep 1818, when he and his wife Arethusa sold the brick house standing on it to the president and directors of the Bank of Shepherdsville, as shown below. John Reed was the bank president, and William Simmons, Richard P. Simmons, Nathan Miles Jr., Nathan Harris, Jacob Bowman, William Jones, John Grayham, and Thomas Q. Wilson were its directors. More details about this early bank may be found on another page.

According to this deed, William Jewell had occupied the brick house as a medical shop. In modern Shepherdsville, that lot would be located where the old Ridgway Library building now sits.

By 14 May 1821, the bank was apparently out of business as the brick house were sold to Henry C. Jones and John M. Jones. This deed states that it was being sold "on behalf of the president and directors of the late Bank of Shepherdsville." The next day they sold it to John Beckwith Sr., as shown below.

John Beckwith Sr. died without a will, and his son John W. Beckwith administered his estate. The former bank house was mentioned in a deed to Martha Beckwith granting her dower third of the estate. It was again mentioned when she sold her share to her son-in-law Benjamin Summers.
