James Garrard's 378 Acre Tract

John Ray Jr. surveyed a 378 acre tract for James Garrard on 10 Feb 1783 that adjoined the east side of Jacob Myer's 400 acre tract. A deed to the tract was issued to Garrard on 10 Apr 1784. The plat drawing below shows the relationship of Garrard's tract with that of Myers, and that of Thomas McGee. These surveys all lay on the north side of Salt River, and east of Shepherdsville.

Surveyed for James Garrard 378 acres of land in Jefferson County by virtue of a treasury warrant No. 30, and is as followeth, to wit, Beginning at a white oak, sugar & beech trees standing on the bank of Salt River about one hundred poles below the mouth of Floyd's Fork, thence N 35° W 278 poles to gum and beech standing on the bank of Floyd's Fork, thence S 40° W 20 poles, thence S 5° W 60 poles, thence N 12° W 90 poles, to an ash and beech trees standing on the bank of Floyd's Fork, thence S 80° W 134 poles to white oak and beech, Jacob Myer's northeast corner, thence S 35° 438 poles to two elms said Myers' southeast corner, thence N 55° E 160 poles to the beginning. Benjamin Harrison Esquire, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, to all to whom these presents shall come, greeting. Know ye that by virtue and in consideration of part of a land office treasury warrant number 30 and issued the 15th day of October 1779, there is granted by the said Commonwealth unto James Garrard a certain tract or parcel of land containing three hundred and seventy eight acres by survey bearing date the 10th day of February one thousand seven hundred and eighty three lying and being in the county of Jefferson and bounded as followeth to wit. Beginning at a white oak, sugar tree and beech tree standing on the bank of Salt River about one hundred poles below the mouth of Floyd's Fork, thence North thirty five degrees West two hundred and seventy eight poles to a gum and beech standing on the bank of Floyd's Fork, thence South forty degrees West twenty poles, thence South eighty five degrees West sixty poles, thence North twelve degrees West ninety poles to an ash and beech tree standing on the bank of Floyd's Fork, thence South eighty degrees West one hundred and thirty four poles to a white oak and beech tree, Jacob Myers northeast corner, thence South thirty five degrees East four hundred and thirty eight poles to two elms said Myer's southeast corner, thence North fifty five degrees East one hundred and sixty poles to the Beginning with its appurtenances to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land with its appurtenances to the said James Garrard and his heirs forever. In witness whereof the said Benjamin Harrison Esquire, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, hath hereunto set his hand and caused the lesser seal of the said Commonwealth to be affixed at Richmond on the tenth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty four and of the Commonwealth the eighth.
