David Grable's Sheriff's Bond Deed

On 2 Jan 1815, William Caldwell, Samuel Simmons, William Morrow, Samuel Brown, Joseph Hedges, and Clifton Hall became Sheriff David Grable's security on his $10,000 bond for the collection fo revenue and county levies for that year. [See Order Book D, page 83.]

On 12 Aug 1817, Grable transferred ownership of his 200 acre tract along Crooked Creek to these men in lieu of their $963.70 in support of his bond. Then on 5 May 1818, after Grable cleared his indebtedness to them, the men signed the land deed over to Grable who was planning to sell it to Isaac Collings.

This indenture made this 12th day of August in the year of our Lord 1817 between David Grable of the county of Bullitt and state of Kentucky of the one part and Samuel Brown, William Caldwell, Samuel Simmons, Clifton Hall, Joseph Hedges, and William Morrow of the county and state aforesaid of the other part.

Witnesseth that the said Grable hath this day bargained and sold and do by these presents bargain and sell unto the said Samuel Brown, William Caldwell, Samuel Simmons, Clifton Hall, Joseph Hedges, and Will Morrow a certain tract or parcel of land in Bullitt County on Crooked Creek, the plantation whereon the said Grable now lives and has lived many years containing 200 acres, being the lower 200 acres of a survey patented to the said Grable and a certain Francis Shain for and in consideration of the sum of $963.70 to the said Grable to him in hand paid, the receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge, and the said David Grable doth hereby release and convey the aforesaid land with all its appurtenances unto the said Samuel Brown, William Caldwell, Samuel Simmons, Clifton Hall, Joseph Hedges, and Will Morrow and their heirs, and the said Grable doth covenant for himself, his heirs, executors &c to relinquish, warrant and defend the aforesaid land to the aforesaid persons named and their heirs, executors &c against all and every person or persons whatever.

In testimony whereof the said Grable hath hereunto set his hand and affixed his seal the date above written.

This indenture made this 5th day of May in the year of our Lord, 1818 between Samuel Brown, Clifton Hall, Samuel Simmons, William Caldwell, Joseph Hedges, and William Morrow of the county of Bullitt and state of Kentucky of the one part and David Grable of the county and state aforesaid of the other part.

Witnesseth that the said Samuel Brown, Clifton Hall, Samuel Simmons, William Caldwell, Joseph Hedges, and William Morrow hath this day bargained and sold, and do by these presents bargain and sell unto the said David Grable a certain tract or parcel of land in Bullitt County on Crooked Creek, the plantation whereon the said Grable lately lived containing 200 acres, being the lower 200 acres of a survey patented to the said Grable and Francis Shain, for the consideration of one dollar to the said Samuel Brown, Clifton Hall, Samuel Simmons, William Caldwell, Joseph Hedges, and William Morrow to us in hand paid, the receipt whereof we do hereby acknowledge, and we the said Samuel Brown, Clifton Hall, Samuel Simmons, William Caldwell, Joseph Hedges, and William Morrow doth hereby release and reconveyed the aforesaid land with all it appurtenances unto the said David Grable and his heirs, and the said Samuel Brown, Clifton Hall, Samuel Simmons, William Caldwell, Joseph Hedges, and William Morrow doth covenant for themselves, their heirs, executors &c to relinquish, warrant and defend the aforesaid land to the said Grable, his heirs &c against alland every person or persons whatsoever claiming under us, our heirs, executors, administrators.

It is also further understood that this said tract of 200 acres of land was conveyed to the subscribers who was security for David Grable as sheriff for the collection of the revenue taxes for the year 1814, and having paid money for him, he the said Grable having this day renumerated us, and in conformity of our bond to Grable we reconvey; and it is still further understood that we are in no one instance accountable to said Grable should this land ever hereafter be at any time lost.

In testimony whereof the said Samuel Brown, Clifton Hall, Samuel Simmons, William Caldwell, Joseph Hedges, and William Morrow hath hereunto set our hands and affixed our seals the day and date above written.
