The Barrall Family

Among the pioneer families of Kentucky, closely identified with the history of Bullitt County, arc the BARRALLs who first settled in the vicinity of Louisville. According to family tradition, Christian BARRELL Sr. came to America from France, and grew to manhood in a Dutch family in Pennsylvania. Early in the settlement of Kentucky he came down the Ohio River to "the Falls," where he acquired several tracts of land. Some of the original grants, signed by Governor Patrick Henry of Virginia, are prized family heirlooms now in the possession of the pioneer's great- grandson, Christian Barrall, III.

The senior Christian Barrall's second wife was Elizabeth HARSHFIELD, and their children were Silas Field, John, Christian Jr., Joseph Alden, and Barbara BARRAL. The latter, born in 1836, married Franklin SAMUELS, and died in 1937, aged 101 years. During her long life of more than a century, she saw her country engaged in four wars: the war with Mexico, the war between the States, the war with Spain, and World War I. She witnessed the changes in transportation from the stage coach and slow river steamboats, to the railroad, the automobile, and the airplane; from muddy, dusty trails to broad concrete highways. She experienced the change from candles to electricity, from post- riders to rural mail delivery by air mail, from "grape-vine" communication to telegraph, telephone, and wireless radio, and in dress from hoop-skits to bloomers and slacks! What a life of surprising experiences and revolutionary chages!

Silas Field BARRAL married Maria A. SAMUELS in 1854; their children: Anna Bell, married ---- ROWLAND; Abagail, died in infancy; Theresa, married T.W. LONGACRE; they had six children, of whom Alex is the only one now living. Mrs. Theresa (BARRALL) LONGACRE is now 89 years old.

Georgia, daughter of Silas F. BARRALL, married J.K. ROSS; of their five children, Howard ROSS and his sister, Mrs. Mamie FINNEGAN, of Louisville, are the only ones still living.

M. Lee BARRALL married Fred HATZELL; they have a daughter, Wilma, and live at Brooks.

J.W. BARRALL, son of Silas F. BARRALL, was for many years editor of the "Pioneer News," now ably and efficiently edited by his daughter, Mrs. A.B. HAWKINS. In 1914, J.W. BARRALL represented Bullitt County in the Kentucky Legislature; he died in 1933. His wife was Myrtle E. GREEN WELL; they had two daughters, Beulah and Anna; the latter married Allen R. HAWKINS Jr., now Sheriff of Bullitt County.

Sally Irene, daughter of Silas F. BARRALL, married Charles ALFORD; their children: Darwin, Roger, Charles Jr., Georgia Alice, Evelyn, and Irene. Mrs. ALFORD and her son Charles now live on the Silas Field BARRALL farm at Brooks.

S. Bloomer BARRALL died 1912; Mollie M. BARRALL, daughter of Silas, married Joseph F. FOSTER; they had one daughter, Flora Lee; Flora and her mother, now a widow, live in Louisville.

A grandson of Silas F. BARRALL, Dr. Emmet Field HORINE, lives near Brooks, within a few miles of his birthplace where he was born in 1995. Dr. HORINE edited a revised edition of "Pioneer Life in Kentucky," written as a series of letters to his children, many years ago, by Daniel DRAKE, distinguished pioneer physician and teacher of medicine in Lexington, Cincinnati, and Louisville.

John BARRALL, son of Christian Sr., was the father of Mrs. Mattie ABLE. Alden, brother of John, had several children, of whom John and Claude of Knob Creek are living. Christian BARRALL Jr., son of the Kentucky pioneer, was born in 1826, died 1904; he married, first Rava Jane MARTIN; Marion, Louis, and Thomas were their sons.

Christian BARRALL Jr. married, second, 1877, Mary Ellen MAGRUDER, widow of Charles R. SAMUELS; her daughter, Julia K. SAMUELS, married in 1878, to Louis BARRALL, son of Christian Jr., by his first wife. Josie Swearingen SAMUELS, sister of Julia, married, first, Marion BARRALL; he died in 1885, and his widow married, second, Thomas BARRALL, brother of Marion.

Louis and Julie SAMUELS BARRALL were the parents of George Magruder BARRALL, now a dentist in Kansas City, Missouri; Virginia BARRALL, died 1918; and Josie BARRALL who married James Robert ZIMMERMAN of Shepherdsville; he died in 1932, leaving a son, James Robert ZIMMERMAN Jr.

Marion and Josie SAMUELS BARRALL had two sons, Christian III, arid Marion Foskett BARRALL, who died in 1940; he was a soldier in World War I.

Christian BARRALL Jr. was an extensive land-owner in Bullitt County, prominent in the timber and lumber business of Bullitt County for several years.
