Annotated Bullitt County 1850 Census

We continue the Bullitt County 1850 census written by Mrs. W. V. Mathis, Wallace A. McKay and W. C. Barrickman. Betty Darnell shared this in The Pioneer News on 12 Aug 1991.

These records have been briefly compared to images of the census pages, and occasional additions or corrections have been made. Those changes we consider significant are noted with red print. Also, the census dwelling house number and family number according to visitation has been added, like this: [1/1].

10 February 1950

Samuel McKay SIMMONS was principal of Shepherdsville school, and perhaps the best teacher the school ever had.

Among the Senior members of the school at the close of Prof. SIMMONS first term were Katie, Dixie and Hamilton FIELD, children of R.H. FIELD, Bullitt County's most prominent lawyer; Mary POPE, daughter of James Y. POPE; Phil and Kate THOMPSON; Claude CRIST; Minnie and Ida TROUTMAN, who later married Senator Charles CARROLL. Mary POPE became the wife of John D. HAGAN, a well-known Louisville man.

There were also the HAYS girls, daughters of James H. HAYS. Mattie married Herbert GLENN, prominent Shepherdsville lawyer, and her sister Ella became the wife of Samuel B. MAGRUDER.

A year or two before, Emma TROUTMAN, an elder sister of Minnie and Ida, had finished school. She became the wife of J. Fletcher COMBS, soon after he was elected Clerk of the Bullitt Circuit Court. This election was a close contest between "Fletch" and former Sheriff James H. HAYS.

Prof. SIMMONS later moved to Eagle Pass, Texas, where he was the U.S. Consul for several towns and cities in Mexico. Prof. SIMMONS was the youngest son of Nicholas SIMMONS, who died about 1880, leaving a large estate to be divided among his widow, Betsy, three sons, George W., Wm. M., and Samuel Mark SIMMONS, and a daughter, Mrs. L.P. MYER. George W. SIMMONS married early in life, and had three children, Sam N. "Wax," Wm. N., Jr., and Lula who married Col. Tom COCHRAN. George W. SIMMONS was a trader in farm and timber lands. At the time of his death he was the largest land owner in Bullitt County.
