Annotated Bullitt County 1850 Census

We continue the Bullitt County 1850 census written by Mrs. W. V. Mathis, Wallace A. McKay and W. C. Barrickman. Betty Darnell shared this in The Pioneer News on 2 Jul 1990.

These records have been briefly compared to images of the census pages, and occasional additions or corrections have been made. Those changes we consider significant are noted with red print. Also, the census dwelling house number and family number according to visitation has been added, like this: [1/1].

19 August 1949

(Armistead and Charles MOREHEAD, brothers of Virginia, came to Kentucky as pioneers. Armistead settled in Bullitt, while his brother Chartes became a citizen of Nelson County. In 1797, near Shepherdsville, James Turner MOREHEAD, son of Armistead, was born. In 1802, his first cousin, Chatles Slaughter MOREHEAD, was born at Bardstown. James practiced law at Bowling Green.

The old "Morehead House," the leading hotel in Bowling Green before and after the Civil War, was named for his family. He was Governor in 1834, U.S. Senator in 1841. He died in 1854 and is buried in the state Cemetery at Frankfort. Charles Slaughter MOREHEAD of Nelson County served a term in Congress and also became Governor of Kentucky prior to the Civil War.)
