Thomas Whitledge's 400 Acre Tract

On 29 Oct 1783, Thomas Whitledge surveyed 400 acres along a branch of Cox's Creek for John Salley. Salley then signed it over to Whitledge on 1 Aug 1791, likely as payment for other surveys done by Whitledge. Whitledge obtained his deed to the land on 26 Apr 1792.


Survey

Surveyed for a John Salley 400 acres of land on treasury warrant number 3918 in Jefferson County entered on the lower side of a branch of Cox's creek adjoining William Salley's 400 acres survey as followeth to wit. Beginning at white oak east of the creek 50 poles below Philip Speller's 250 acre survey, thence North 30° East 54 poles adjoining William Salley's 400 acre survey and with his line 246 poles in all 300 poles to three sugar trees and two ashes, thence South 60° East 36 poles crossing the creek 214 poles to a large white oak, ash and sugar tree, thence South 30° West 300 poles to white oak and two dogwoods near a glade, corner to John Farrow's 500 acre survey, then along in with his line North 60° West 214 poles to the beginning. I do assign all my right, title, claim, interest of the within survey of 400 acre plat of land unto Thomas Whitledge for value received of said Whitledge as witness my hand this firt day August 1791. (signed) John Salley. Witnesses: John Frade, Lawrence (his X mark) Roby

Henry Lee Esquire, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, to all to whom these presents shall come, greeting. Know ye that by virtue of a land of a land office treasury warrant number ... issued the 15th day of March 1780 there is granted by the said Commonwealth unto Thomas Whitledge, assignee of John Salley, a certain tract or parcel of land containing 400 acres by survey bearing date the 29th of October 1783, lying and being in the County of Jefferson on the lower side of a branch of Cox's Creek, a branch adjoining William Salley's 400 acre survey and bounded as followeth, to wit. Beginning at white oak east of the creek 50 poles below Philip Speller's 250 acre survey, thence North 30° East 54 poles adjoining William Salley's 400 acre survey and with his line 246 poles in all 300 poles to three sugar trees and two ashes, thence South 60° East 36 poles crossing the creek 214 poles to a large white oak, ash and sugar tree, thence South 30° West 300 poles to white oak and two dogwoods near a glade, corner to John Farrow's 500 acre survey, then along in with his line North 60° West 214 poles to the beginning with its appurtenances to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land with its appurtenances to the said Thomas Whitledge and his heirs forever.
