William Shannon's 560 Acre Tract on East Fork of Cox's Creek

On 16 Jul 1784, Thomas Whitledge surveyed a 560 acre tract for William Shannon that lay along the North Fork of Cox's Creek. Today that stream is called the East Fork. It is interesting to note that one corner of this tract lay "near the mouth of a branch emptying in Cox's Creek and by the old Harrodsburg Road," thus helping to locate a point on this leg of the Wilderness Road. Shannon received a deed to this tract on 17 Mar 1790, while it was still a part of Nelson County.

Surveyed for William Shannon 560 acres of land by virtue of a treasury warrant No. 2192 in Jefferson County duly entered on the south side of Salt River about 2 or 3 miles above the mouth of Cox's Creek, and on the north fork of Cox's Creek 200 poles above a fork of the said creek. Beginning at two beeches and small sugar tree on the south side of the said creek, running thence N 40° W 299 poles to a walnut, ash and small white oak at a branch, thence N 50° E 300 poles to a stooping white oak, hickory and beech on a hill, thence S 40° E 299 poles to hoop ash, honey locust and buckeye tree near the mouth of a branch emptying in Cox's Creek and by the old Harrodsburg Road, then down the said north fork of Cox's Creek S 50° W 300 poles to the beginning. Beverly Randolph Esquire, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, to all to whom these presents shall come, greeting. Know ye that by virtue and in consideration of part of a land office treasury warrant number 2192 there is granted by the said Commonwealth unto William Shannon a certain tract or parcel of land containing 560 acres by survey bearing date the 16th day of July 1784, lying and being in the County of Jefferson on the south side of Salt River about two or three miles above the mouth of Cox's Creek, and on the North fork of said Creek 200 poles above the fork of said Creek, and bounded as followeth, to wit. Beginning at two beeches and small sugar tree on the south side of the said creek, running thence North 40° West 299 poles to a walnut, ash and small white oak at a branch, thence North 50° East 300 poles to a stooping white oak, hickory and beech on a hill, thence South 40° East 299 poles to hoop ash, honey locust and buckeye tree near the mouth of a branch emptying in Cox's Creek and by the old Harrodsburg Road, then down the said north fork of Cox's Creek South 50° West 300 poles to the beginning with its appurtenances to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land with its appurtenances to the said William Shannon and his heirs forever.
