Incorporation of Pitts Point Academy

On February 3, 1870 the General Assembly approved an act to incorporate the Pitt's Point Male and Female Academy. We have transcribed this act below.

CHAPTER 257.

AN ACT to incorporate the Pitt's Point Male and Female Academy, of Bullitt County.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

§ 1. That W. G. Hays, J. W. Glenn, and A. C. Kennison, and their successors in office, be, and they are hereby, created a body-corporate and politic, under the name and style of the board of trustees of the Pitt's Point Male and Female Academy; in which name they may sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded, contract, and be contracted with, and may make such rules, by-laws and regulations, as may be necessary for the government of said corporation, and do all other acts that such a body-politic and corporate may rightfully do, not inconsistent with the laws of the United States or the State of Kentucky.

§ 2. The board of trustees shall be composed of three members, one of whom shall act as chairman of the board at all meetings of business, all of whom shall be elected annually, on the first Saturday in August.

§ 3. The board shall have the exclusive right to employ and dismiss teachers, to let out, the school building to teachers free of rent, or for a stipulated price, whichever seems to them best for the interest of the school, and for the benefit of the stockholders.

§ 4. The board of trustees shall also have the right to confer such honorary degrees and diplomas as is usual in other colleges and high schools in this Commonwealth.

§ 5. So long as the said academy and grounds shall be used for school purposes, it shall be exempt from taxation, as other like institutions are exempt from in this Commonwealth.

§ 6. This act to take effect from its passage.
